Watine TRS111

Short Series Of Arranged Piano | TRS111

This is the new album of introspective and electronically tinged piano miniatures from our favorite French composer, Catherine Watine! It’s our 4th release with Catherine, and once again in her own melancholic and melodic fashion she has fit our aural aesthetic perfectly. These beautiful little pieces will have you dreaming of rainy Parisian afternoons, clockwork mechanisms and mysterious encounters of the heart.

TRS is responsible for the packaging and design of the Deluxe limited vinyl version of the album, this time in an edition of only 40 copies. Once again we have taken liberties with the original artwork from the standard vinyl version, created by the incomparable graphiste et magicienne, @vel.visual…aka Caroline Lysiak. The piano in her original artwork has been cut open by @mariachenut, hand-stitched around with twine, with the inside filled with vintage musical notes, cloth flowers and netting, and then attached to 1950’s Classical music boxes in a 3 dimensional manner. Inside the box is the original printed textual insert, a unique, engraved coversheet from a 100+ year old sheet music songbook, and in the back, nestled in folded, textured book binding paper is one of a variety of types of antique, metal music box discs. Each box then comes in an oversized poly-bag.

We will also have limited quantities of the standard vinyl version as well, at our TRS Bandcamp page, where of course it is also available in digital form, if you must!

This release will start shipping early February 2024.

“Since 2005, WATINE (Catherine Watine) has surveyed a universe embracing both the fury of electro and noise rock, the extreme delicacy of symphonic pop, and the dazzling mysteries of contemporary music abandoned by any partition. From one disc to another, she has never lost her way, and each work along her journey makes sense and is part of a coherent creative approach. Carefully thought out and composed.

From her inaugural album “Random Moods”, a masterstroke which will make Catherine Watine an electro icon for a time, bringing together around her a prestigious anthology of the most influential producers, to these post-folk gems, much more intimate and personal , which will establish the musician as an exceptional and valuable singer-songwriter. Until her instrumental trilogy, propelling her into an extraordinary dimension, now close to Fauré and Satie.

Each step and each mutation is the result of a musical exploration that is as demanding as it is accessible. But more and more free. A deep reflection on sound and music. More and more centered on an experience, almost spiritual. And like all unclassifiable works, that of Catherine Watine ended up absorbing everything that surrounded her. Becoming the vehicle of an existence and its shadows. Achieving universal significance. Without ever withdrawing into itself. As evidenced by the noise project PHÔS, experimental albums, in collaboration, revealing Watine’s literary writing more directly.

From English to French, from the sayable to the unspeakable, from electro to organic, from pop to abstraction, from noise to the deepest introspection, Catherine Watine’s music never ceases to evolve. to build a patient, exciting, fascinating house with multiple entrances, but with a moving and unique aesthetic.

Her new project for 2023: SHORT SERIES OF ARRANGED PIANO, a nocturnal walk around his piano, with small elegant and terribly melancholy pieces and then will come an album of French songs on the piano, in the great tradition of a solo instrument and voice.”

I’ve never liked the beginning of the night, when everything fades away, including the familiar sounds of life. My PLEYEL piano has often saved me from these moments between twilight and dawn. Here are a few of my improvisations on this album, to which I couldn’t resist adding my own little forest of elves and the enveloping sounds you now know me for.
